What Is Keg Ball?

Keg ball is a fun game that is very similar to kickball. In fact, the only difference is the addition of a keg of beer. The game is played on a field with bases (first, second, third and home), and all players (fielders and kickers) are required to have a glass of beer in their hands at all times. This makes running, kicking, catching and throwing difficult.

The basics

In order to play keg ball, you need a minimum of 16 players, eight for each team. You also need 16 beer cups and replacement cups in case of accidental breakage. You need to acquire a keg of beer and a kickball. If you are playing on a baseball diamond, there are probably already bases, but, if not, you should bring base markers.

Starting the game: "The Slam Off"

The game starts with each team facing each other in a straight line with a full cup of beer. Starting at one end, the lead player chugs his or her beer. When that beer is gone, the next player begins to drink, and so on through the line. The first team to finish all of its beers is the winner of the slam off and can choose to kick or receive.

Game play

For the most part, play according to standard kickball or baseball rules. There are a few differences, however. You are only safe on a base while you are drinking. That means that if someone tags you with a ball and your lips are not on your cup, you are out. The game is not over until the keg is gone or it is dark. When darkness falls, the keg is removed to a player's home and all the players should finish drinking it.
